On 2 July 2011, I came out to watch my nephew, Nathan Butterfield race in the Junior 2 division and Kate was awesome to let me shoot the event. The 1st and 2nd of July brought record temps to the Coulee region, a lot of people jokingly blamed us for bringing Arizona high temps with us… for local residents it was a scorcher but working in Afghanistan where humidity is 70% and higher with black bulb temps of 144 degrees bringing the heat index up to the mid 150’s it felt like spring to me.
John and Kate Schaitel head up the family operated 1/8 mile high banked pavement go-kart track located on the La Crosse Fairgrounds property in West Salem, WI. Racing season runs May – August and races are held most every Friday night. During practice I perched under the flagstand to get a different perspective and angle, it made the track safety crews a bit nervous but were cool enough to let me shoot there until the races got started.
Once the Heat Races and Feature Events heated up, I moved to the inside of the track so I could be close to “Victory Lane” but from there I could shoot both ends of the race track using my Canon f/2.8 300mm. Some may think that is too much lens for such a small track but you need to make these little cars look big otherwise they just get lost in the background. I used my Canon f/2.8 70-200mm as well when I wanted to show more cars in the shot and for “Victory Lane” shots I used my Canon f/2.8 24-70mm. Using f/2.8 helped out a lot in low light as the day went on so I didn’t need my flash but I had it there just in case. Of course, day light savings time helped too, not getting dark until 9:30pm.
Who could pass up a “Dukes of Hazard” General Lee mini-me?
Here are the Feature Winners from the night, I love the way the track allows the drivers to do a Victory Lap with the checkered flag “Old School”… burn outs in the higher level series have grown old and tiresome.
