I never shot snowmobile racing before so I jumped at the chance to head out to West Salem, WI. on the frozen Lake Neshonoc for some vintage snowmobile action. This year Pro Vintage Racing is celebrating their 20th year as a sanctioning body with a 12 member group of organizers dedicated solely to vintage snowmobile racing. There are 7 main classes, Pure stock, Relic, Mod Stock, Pro Stock, Super Stock, IFS-IFSX, and Formula 500 in addition there are 5 Specialty Classes such as Juniors, Women’s, Super Seniors, Masters and IFS Masters.
What better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to bundle up and head out on a frozen lake with over 24″ of ice in -20 degree weather and watch some snowmobiles put on a show. You have to be from up north to find pleasure in those kind of temps, I had a blast!
I bought a Matin All-Weather Cover from Cameta Camera for my DLSR camera and 2 Zippo Hand Warmers, that combo worked fantastic and I’ll be posting a review on the use of them later. But I put on 4 layers of clothes to protect me and spent 5 hours out on the ice watching these bad ass machines compete.
This being my first time shooting this group or any group like it, I’ll apologize ahead of time for not knowing who the racers were so I could mention them by name in the captions nor did I know the classes. You can visit their Facebook Page or visit their web site to review race results from their West Salem Event.
