Last night I was blessed with the opportunity to photograph the All Services Boxing Championships at Fort Huachuca, AZ., the base that is adjacent to the community I live in. One of my goals photographically has been to try my hand at shooting a sparring match, last night was better because I got to shoot actual matches. So what happens when someone who primarily shoots weddings and couples in love gets to shoot boxing? You get some “romanticized” boxing pics. I wasn’t aiming (or focsuing) to capture just the technical aspects and action in the ring. I was also looking for the little moments of the event and the little things that happen around the ring that as a spectactor and fan of boxing I miss by simply sitting and watching a match. Many years ago I was an amateur boxing judge and still find when I am spectating I count blows and “judge” a fight. Last night was different, I saw everything with a new eye through my lens. Just like when I shoot a wedding I was looking for the action but also the details and the “heart” of the event. Here are some of my favorites.
For my photog friends:The lighting was beyond challenging. I used my 50mm 1.8, wide open, and high ISO for all of these shots. Enjoy. ![]()

Great shots Maria. You even got the classic sweat flying shot. The noise just adds to the images.
