Don’t let this happen to you!

Okay, when you see the picture you may think this is a post about fashion “dos and don’ts”…you’d be right the picture should have a big “no-no” symbol embossed across it or at the very least it should have black boxes over our eyes.  Today is Robert’s and my 15th wedding anniversary!  YAY!!!  And, yes, those two people trapped in the 80′s clothes in the middle of the 90′s are me and Robert.  Don’t judge us too harshly, it was a different time. :)

Now for the “Don’t let this happen to you!” portion of this post (as if the clothes aren’t bad enough)  Yesterday I saw a news report about how the wedding industry is suffering in the current economy and how couples are scaling back to make their weddings more affordable.  The list of $ savers included skipping custom invitations, buying the dress off the rack, scaling back on the wedding cake and not hiring a professional wedding photographer; opting instead to have friends capture moments with their cameras for the bride & groom.  That last suggestion really bothered me for two reasons 1) I love shooting weddings and I don’t want the economy getting in the way of what I love.  2) see pic above.   Robert and I did not hire a professional wedding photographer, we had friends armed with cameras take the pictures for us.  Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for our friends however if there is anything now that I look back on with more regret than our clothing choices it’s that we didn’t have a professional capture the day for us.  15 years later, the cake is long gone as are the invitations and thankfully those clothes.  All we have from the day is that one very poor picture.     Please, please, please if you are planning a wedding “don’t let this happen to you” hire someone who loves weddings and loves photographing them and knows how to, trust me you will only be sorry if you don’t.

Finally, to my Honey, thank you for 15 years of being my best friend, for making me laugh, for letting me sing my little songs and tell my little jokes which are all really bad (I know but I can’t stop myself) and for not running in the other direction when you saw me coming down the aisle in those white stockings! :)   Oh, and for letting me post that picture of us which I know you will catch nine kinds of heck for from your friends at work. :)  I promise never to let you wear a tie that thin or a suit jacket that short again, unless of course you join an 80′s revival band.  {snort}

If our “80′s wear” brought back fond memories and left you wanting more here’s an 80′s fix:

Oh, Maria! This was so funny. I’m sitting here waiting for my baby to come out of surgery and it made me smile in this scary moment. Thank you. Love you and Congrats on 15 years! Wishing you at least 60 more!xoxoxo

REDCURLYQQS - July 24, 2009 - 12:15 pm

I’m so sorry I missed this post. Didn’t realize you got married at TMCC’s old building!! I just remember you being there. How funny and how appropriate for you to speak your thoughts. Congrats. Many more happy years.

wait, WHAT? WHAT? That was your wedding day photo? Ohhhhh - goodness Although your face is bright and beautiful (talk about great features!) the fashion is well… not my style?

I totally agree with you! The absolute thing you SHOULD NEVER skimp on is the photography - If I ever get married - I want a totally simple wedding - I will be barefoot in a long flowy dress with flowers in my hair and 20 guests who will be sitting on pillows on the floor - really, I think weddings can be simple and beautiful and classy without being completely overpriced.

Sorry I havent been over here for awhile - Ive been going through a personal crisis! Ahhhhhhhh

Happy anniversary!!!!!!!!!

Hi Maria!!! Thanks so much for your comment, you’re so sweet! I looove this post by the way! I was laughing when I realized that we have more similarity, we both got married in July! Haha!

Michele - July 13, 2009 - 10:01 pm

I totally agree! We got married at a friend’s house (thankfully!!!), had cupcakes instead of cake from the local grocery store and I got my dress on Chinese e-bay, BUT, the best thing I did( besides marrying Cody) was to hire Maria and savor the most beautiful pictures every time we look at them and share them with family! They will last forever!!!! Thanks Maria! BTW: Happy Anniversary! I love the way Robert is checking you out in this pic…he knows it’s a good thing!!!! HAHAHHA!

Congrats!! :) I agree, it is so important to have a professional photographer! :)

Cheryl…. You have a cement pond huh? If you think our fancy go to meetin’ clothes are hideous you should see our bathin’ suits.

Trish…. Can’t touch this!

Maria - July 11, 2009 - 12:51 am

I’ve heard of people setting disposable cameras out for friends to take pictures, but I’m pretty sure that photography is not a field one can successfully just jump into- especially after a few celebratory cocktails! I’m not sure I would trust any of the groomsmen to take “appropriate” (let alone breathtaking) photos even when sober! :) I’m thrilled I will have an amazing photog!Congratulations on 15 years with your husband! Gotta love the 80′s! (so much so that you carried them into the 90′s!)

the 80′s RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy 15th lovebirds!

Trish - July 10, 2009 - 10:46 am

No regrets about the “Hammer Time!” jacket? Really!? :-)

I feel that I can bust ya’ll on this. We have similar wedding pics. I got my dress at Factory 2 You for $20.00 and Doug wore his prom suit. The pants were too tight and he had to wear the jacket to hide the fact that he could not button them. :-) At least Maria had pretty hair, you should see mine! And, you, Robert, your suit was so…shiny.

And Maria’s stockings…”Nurse Butterfield to the pshyc ward, Nurse Butterfield to the physc ward, stat!”

Cheryl - July 10, 2009 - 10:45 am

ummm wow, i don’t know if I can be your friend anymore. Those outfits are beyond hideous!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOL, joking aside, congrats on your 15 years, heres to 50 more. Okay but seriously where did you find that suit?????? and how drunk were you both when you were getting dressed.
I think you guys should come to Montreal, renew your vows and I will take you some real pics! c’mon, i have a pool!

Art Lange - July 10, 2009 - 6:30 am

My sincere warm wishes to you both.

angelo giusti - July 10, 2009 - 5:57 am

Congradulations to both of you. Still don’t know how you put up with the farting??!!

Walter - July 10, 2009 - 5:40 am

Wow Boss, that suite is quite impressive. It is good to see that your hairstyle hasn’t changed in 15 years besides the gray.

Jokes aside, congratulations and happy anniversary!

Robert - July 10, 2009 - 5:01 am

Good Heavens! Please tell me moths ate that 80s hangover, wannabe zoot suit by now and if it hasn’t been thrown away by now please hunt it down and kill it. No seriously.

See, that’s what happens when a Red Neck tries to get in style?

15 years babe, that’s awesome, you are my best friend and soul mate. I laugh when we finish each other sentences, I laugh when you fall for my pranks, I laugh when you say something so naive you just have to be kidding but you’re not, I laugh when you try to be the tough guy, I laugh…. ok, I don’t laugh when you sing but I look forward to more laughs as we grow old together (man I can’t wait to sabotage your walker). Gosh, 15 years girl, I am proud of us.

Susan - July 10, 2009 - 4:21 am

Happy anniversary. I love you both.

angela - July 10, 2009 - 1:46 am

I like to call things in my life that happen unexpectedly and turn into something wonderful “happy accidents”. I’ve had many happy accidents, meeting my husband, forgetting an ingredient in a recipe and discovering it tasted better without the ingredient, etc... Photography was another “happy accident". A friend needed someone to help shoot auto races, my husband volunteered me and bought me my first Digital SLR camera. Five years have passed since those first nights standing on a wall and trying my best to capture cars traveling 120 mph heading directly at me. It didn’t take me long before I wanted to learn how to operate the camera without guidance. My journey began and still continues. read more
