Pocket Wizards and the 70 cent Fix

I like to use off camera flash at wedding receptions.  With off camera flash I can get shots like these…I love the extra pop of light from the off camera flash behind my subjects.

In order to use off camera flash I have one flash head attached to the body of my camera and a second flash head attached to a light stand usually just off of the dance floor.  I use Pocket Wizards to trigger the secondary flash when the flash on my camera body fires.  This all sounds fine and dandy but there is a catch.  The Pocket Wizards only come with small lanyards to keep them in range of the flashes they are wired to.  For awhile I tried keeping the little wizards in range with the  lanyards wrapped around my flash heads and that just did not work, it was cumbersome and the Pocket Wizards just flailed around and got in my way.

The next “fix” was attaching velcro to the flash head and to the Pocket Wizards.  This worked well but as the evening wore on I found myself adjusting the wizard on my camera body and for some reason it just seemed to get in my way.  I don’t know why because I don’t grab the flash head when shooting but it was sticking there like a sore thumb or sometimes just dangling by a velcro thread.  Not to mention the wizards seem to communicate best when the transmitter is aimed directly at its buddy on the off camera flash.  Here is the velcro set-up. YUCK!

I explained my frustration to Robert and told him something just had to be done.  Well, he is very handy and clever and I knew he would figure out a solution.  Wa-la after a couple of hours plotting and planning  and spending 70 cents at the hardware store he fashioned a little contraption that is perfect.  It’s just small enough to not be in my way and just large enough to not get lost in my camera bag.  It may not be pretty but I love it!  I am sure there are other photogs who have either devised or purchased fixes for the Pocket Wizard dilemma and they may be prettier than mine but I am going to stick with it.  It will remind me every time I use it just how ingenious my guy is and how he is always willing to make my life a little easier…even at the high cost of 70 cents. :)

Want one?  You too can have your own…here are the “high-tech” plans. :)

Maria - Hi Ang! The three nuts act like a little handle for screwing one of the threaded ends into the pocket wizard. I suppose it could be done with less nuts but that worked perfect for my fingers. :)

Angela - Oh that’s a great idea! Can I ask, why he used three nuts? I mean, could it be mounted closer to the camera to make it stick out less and still work properly? Very cool. Looks alot better than velcro! Thanks for sharing.
