Welcome to my blog.  If you have visted before you might notice that there have been some changes...it's a whole new look.

My name is Maria Butterfield and this is my home on the web where I share my most recent work and sometimes personal happenings.  I love photography!  I love every opportunity to share in special moments and capture them through my lens so they will never be forgotten.

I hope you enjoy visiting my blog...feel free to leave me a comment or just say "hi".

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter from me and my “peeps”.  ;)

Couldn’t resist the play on words; it is sure to make my teenage sons roll their eyes!  :)

I hope that everyone who stops by my blog today enjoys a wonderful Easter and experiences the true joy and reason for this holiday.

Today is also my Honey’s Birthday!  Happy Birthday Babe!

We will be away from email contact for a few days while we attend my Dad’s funeral.  If you contact me I’m not ignoring you, I will answer emails as soon as we return, thank you for your understanding.

April 12, 2009 - 12:34 pm Susan - Happy Easter. Robert, Happy birthday. I'm sorry I forgot but I love you.

I wish this was a “Scratch ‘n Sniff” blog

Spring is here in all it’s glory and my backyard is coming to life.  I want to share some pics I took this morning while enjoying the great weather.  The lilacs smell incredible!

Someone else took a liking to the lilacs

The apple tree is putting out some nice blossoms.  Hoping we beat the birds to the apples this year.

I wouldn’t want a “Scratch ‘n Sniff” blog so the pugs could be smelled; pugs aren’t known for having a wonderful odor.   ;)

They were looking particularly cute though following me around.

I would like to say “thank you” to everyone that has offered condolences, love and prayers to my family and I while we deal with my Dad’s passing.  A simple ”thank you” isn’t enough to express how much we appreciate your care and concern, you have blessed us!  {BIG HUGS} to each and every one of you!

April 8, 2009 - 11:01 am Cheryl - Spring, I almost forgot what season that is LOLOLOL. You are a big show off down south with your flowers!!!!! And I got your comment on my blog, I will update soon i promise.

April 8, 2009 - 9:35 am ang - oh me, oh my! Is that foilage and blossoms?! SPRING! Yay! I'm loving your doggy shots. Cute pugs. :)

There are some things in your life you expect will be there forever

I always thought my Dad would be there.  I’m not sure if it is proper blog “etiquette” to share something so personal or not upbeat and happy but I need to make a tribute to my Dad who lost his battle with cancer yesterday evening.  I need to do this for him but also for my heart.

My Dad was a military man, a soldier’s soldier, who gave 30 years of distinguished service to his country.  As a “military brat” I learned from him the value of service and to have gratitude for those who serve.  I learned sacrifice for country and I learned anything worth doing was worth doing right.

He was also a son, a father, a brother, a husband, a father-in-law, a grandpa and me and my sister’s daddy.  Because he didn’t have sons or perhaps because he was trying to equip me for life he taught me how to fix my car when it broke down, how to chop wood and how to pull myself up by my bootstraps and keep pushing when life threw me curve balls.

He had a sensitive side too.  He always claimed not to like cats but I caught him more than a few times petting the family cat early in the morning when he thought no one was watching.   ;)

One of my earliest memories is when I was 4 yrs old and he brought home a teddy bear for me that had felt eyelashes and a little pom-pom belly button.  It was the belly button that caught his eye and caused him to purchase it.  The eyelashes and the little belly button are long gone after many years of being squeezed and cuddled but I still have the teddy bear.  It makes me smile, everytime I look at it, remembering the day the soldier came home and gave it to his little girl.

I know as the days go by I will have many more memories that come to mind but those are the ones that jump out at me at this moment.

In the last four years of his life he was blessed to be married to Susan, a woman who stood by him and loved him .  He told me in our last phone call that the times with her were some of the happiest of his life.  I am grateful to Susan for the love and care she gave him, for her strength in battling with him and battling for him when he couldn’t battle.  He was blessed by her presence.  Thank you Susan.

I will miss you Dad.  I know you are in Jesus’ arms now, hearing a choir of angels, at peace after a soldier’s final battle.  See you on the other side.  I love you!

April 13, 2009 - 1:40 pm Deb Gunsch - Hey Maria, I just got back on your site and noticed this blog. I'm so sorry. Having just gone through this with my mom, I know how hard it is. She died from Brain tumor/cancer the day after Christmas, so it's been a hard time since then. I'll be praying for you and your family. Love, Deb

April 8, 2009 - 9:35 am ang - Oh Maria... What a full and long life your father had. From your story he sounds like a wonderful man who will be fondly remembered. Beautiful memories at that. Sweet little bear. And big hugs to you.

April 8, 2009 - 12:18 am Maria Ramos - Maria, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You wrote a beautiful tribute to your Dad that brought tears to the eyes of this "military brat." Your Dad sounds like a wonderful man and I hope all the beautiful memories that come to you over the next days and weeks will help heal the hurt in your heart, and leave in its place the calm peacefulness that comes with the rememberance and celebration of a life well-lived.

April 7, 2009 - 10:59 am Cheryl - I'm sad to hear of your loss Maria (((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))!

April 6, 2009 - 10:30 pm Nicheli Altamirano - Maria, I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful story about your father. Now I understand a little more why you wanted me to thank my fiance about what he does for our country. Your dad was and will always be a hero to so many people. Thank you so much for the beautiful thank you card you sent me. It really made me feel so special. I don't have a wedding date yet. Unfortunately! But I hope to be in contact with you soon. Take Care and God Bless you and your family.

April 5, 2009 - 2:07 pm Hannah Rodriquez - Hi Mrs. Butterfield I will be praying for you and your family.

April 4, 2009 - 9:25 pm Susan - What a beautiful tribute to your Dad. He loved you very much and so do I. Thank you for the beautiful words. See you soon.

April 4, 2009 - 4:37 am Luke Arms - Thanks for sharing this. A fitting tribute, it seems, for a man I didn't know but somehow respect. May your pain over his loss ease a little each day. Luke

A Prom Story : Sierra Vista Teen Photographer

On Saturday I was invited to my friend Rebekah’s home to capture the fun at her house as Shannon was getting ready for Prom.  I love it when “my Bride’s” become friends.  Since I don’t have daughters to share events like this with I was thrilled with the opportunity.  Shannon was a little excited, she had this banner hanging in her room.

Shannon’s older sisters pitched in and helped her with hair and makeup

Her nephew was more interested in the cat than hair and makeup :)

I love a pretty pair of shoes!

Last minute adjustments before joining her date

Charles was speechless when he saw her coming down the stairs

Loved how perfectly their colors matched

The corsage

Sometimes you need a mom to help with the boutonniere

There were at least 15 other couples and their parents at the house taking pictures.  Charles, Shannon and I snuck away from the excitement for a few minutes to make some formal shots.  Here are a few of my favs

Seriously, they were having fun during the formals, I told them not to think about the camera or smile for some shots.  A little Photoshop fun, LOVE the “timeless feel” in the first one!

Shannon couldn’t hide her smile! :)  Too cute!

A little action

Still smiling and ready to go

Shannon - I hope Prom was everything you hoped it would be and more.  Thanks for inviting me!  I enjoyed spending the afternoon with everyone and sharing in the excitement!  :)

April 17, 2009 - 7:45 am Shawn Nystrom - My Dear Maria, I saw Rebeka the other night and with tears she told me about the wonderful evening when you were there to take photos of her new daughter. They are beautiful. There are artist that know the details of their art and there are artist that emote the emotion they feel in the moment. You are one of those artist that feels, lives and captures all those emotions.....we are sooo lucky to have you in Sierra Vista.....and I do believe you will be busy with a few of us brides....We love you Maria, thank you so much for your talent and being in our lives.....Shawn

April 7, 2009 - 11:01 am Cheryl - Fun Fun Fun, love your processing on these!!!!!

April 3, 2009 - 2:55 am angela - Fun! Love the action shots Maria.

April 1, 2009 - 10:57 am Shannon - Thank you so much, the pictures turned out amazing! I love everyone of them! Prom was everything I hoped it would be and more. I really appreciate everything, thanks again!

March 31, 2009 - 7:05 pm sara - wow!!! this first one of them in the doorway is my FAV!! that is HOT!!!

Bridal Fair….the Winner is…….

Today I had the pleasure of meeting some fabulous future Brides at Dillard’s Spring Bridal Fair.

I had a great time meeting new people and hearing about wedding plans!  The plans I heard about varied from very traditional to a wedding with tie-dye accents (which I thought was too FUN).  The excitement that the girls had discussing their wedding plans was contagious!

Everyone that stopped by my booth had a chance in a drawing for the cool “bride” cap and a $100 gift certificate towards a wedding package

Once I was home the kids were super excited to draw the winner…Congratulations Marianne!

Thank you to everyone that stopped by my booth, it was a pleasure to meet each one of you and I hope you have continued happiness and joy as you plan your weddings.

April 3, 2009 - 2:54 am angela - What a fun booth and raffle! Congrats to the lucky winning Bride. :)

Cheers and Jeers

Today I have two things to share…one that deserves cheers and one that deserves a big ol’ raspberry, you know when you stick your tongue out and make a horrible noise.

First the good news.  We’ve found another place to stick (literally) our new logo!  A race car.  Yes, I know that’s not very romantic and doesn’t scream “wedding” but for Robert and I it fits.  We met at a racetrack, our honeymoon was at Phoenix International Speedway (hmmm…now that’s romance!  :) ).  We fielded a car that Robert drove for a season before diapers, etc… became our main priority.  I cannot count the number of Sunday afternoons we’ve spent watching NASCAR.  My first “real” photo gigs were at Tucson Raceway Park.  Talk about “trial by fire” I was placed on the turn 1 wall with no barrier between myself and the cars and had to capture them as they sped towards, by and past me at full speed.  In retrospect that turned out to be great practice for capturing the action at weddings.  I prefer weddings now…I don’t have to worry about protecting myself or my gear from a car careening out of control.  Plus Brides are much prettier not to mention I’ve never seen a driver having a tender moment with his pitcrew that I could capture.  :)

So, cheers to us and our friends at Boz Racing who will be “flying” our logo this season.  The logo was put on the car today.  Here are some pics of the big event:

Drive it like you stole it David!

Now for the Jeers…Spammers!  Getting a few spam comments a week hasn’t bothered me but today in a matter of 2 minutes I was spammed 16 times!!!  Here’s a screen capture of my admin panel showing a portion of today’s spam attack.  AARGH!!!!!!!!!!

Individually deleting each spam message is time consuming and very irritating especially since I am not in the market for vitamins, online gambling or needing to find a date.  In an effort to stop the spam I have installed a captcha filter in the comment form.   If you want to leave me a comment or a shout out to a friend I have photographed, that you see on my blog, please don’t let the captcha stop you because I love comments.  :)

Have a great evening!

***Update…got a tip from Luke (see comments) he tipped me off to another program that will filter spammers for me.  No more captchas.  Cheers to you Luke!***  :)

March 25, 2009 - 9:20 am Andy - I've used Bad Behavior and Captcha and love them both. It won't change anything..except the amount of spam, that is. No shot of the whole car? =0)

March 24, 2009 - 10:12 am Cheryl - Wow, how awesome that your logo is on a car - you are really big time now. I second Askimet, that is all I use and it catches spam like nobody's business.

March 24, 2009 - 1:55 am angela - Maria that is so exciting! How fun and awesome exposure for your business. The logo looks great on that blue car.

March 24, 2009 - 12:06 am Rafie - For fighting the spam, you might want to use the Bad Behaviour plug in together with Akismet. So far, it has been working very well for me. Cheers!

March 23, 2009 - 10:24 pm BOZ Racing - Maria and Robert - we're glad to be a part of the Butterfield Photography family!!! Especially since we've been racing against each other before but I know we'll have more fun racing with you guys!!! Can't wait for opening night on April 25th!! David (the driver for those who don't know) says you helped bring the passion back into his racing and he is proud to race your colors!! :)

March 23, 2009 - 10:10 pm Luke - Sweet! Hope you're going to post some shots of the car moving too ;) Re: the spam, have you tried the Akismet plugin for Wordpress? Works wonders for me :) Anyway, greetings from another tog united by the same logo designer (mine is still in the concept phase).
